Ways to use the Gap Game

The Gap game is suitable after learners have had success with the videos and related activities.

Option 1:

Oral Instruction

  1. Set up the tiles as shown on the activity sheet for the learner.
  2. Say a lesson-based word out loud. [refer to word list if needed]
  3. Ask the learner to fill in the gap using the available tiles.

Option 2:

Using Motor Skills

  1. Print out the activity sheet for the learner.
  2. Say a lesson-based word out loud.
  3. Ask the learner to write a letter in the gap with a pencil.

Option 3:

Correction, Comparison & Contrast

When you use Readably, there are many opportunities to compare, contrast and correct in a way that forces the learner to think and ‘learn from their mistakes’.

When you use comparison to show rather than tell, it gives the learner an opportunity to see what their mistake was.

Example 1:

  1. You ask for  /pat/.
  2. Learner makes /pit/.
  3. You show them the /a/ tile and ask them to use it, then read the word.
  4. Now ask them to go back to /pit/ and ask them to read it.

Example 2:

  1. Learner has made the word /tap/ based on the gap in the centre of the word /t_p/
  2. You ask "Is there any other word you can make using the tiles shown?"
